Homecoming
A Tradition Connecting Generations of Cougars
There's nothing quite like the feeling of coming home! From October 14 to 19, SXU will celebrate Homecoming 2024 and honor our community -- the alumni, current students, faculty, staff, and friends who perpetuate our legacy. Experience nostalgia walking down the Warde Academic Center hallways or visiting your old favorite spots, and take some time to check out the new additions on campus and see how Saint Xavier has grown.
Connect with fellow SXU alums and enjoy various events throughout the week, including scholarly conversations, the Class of 1974 reunion, a conversation with our 22nd President, Dr. Keith Elder, and our annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate Tent.
Let's make this Homecoming an unforgettable experience -- together, we are Cougar Nation!

Scholarly Conversation - Medical Cannabis | 7 - 8 p.m. | Butler Reception Room
Our session: Botanic medicine, including cannabis, is a rapidly growing area of health and wellness. However, it is one in which patients need expert education and guidance to be effective and minimize adverse outcomes. There is currently a massive gap between the number of patients who need this guidance and qualified providers who can offer it, and this gap is about to widen dramatically once cannabis is rescheduled to a Schedule III drug, after which hospitals and health care systems will be under pressure to begin offering cannabis to hospitalized patients but will lack staff with the training and expertise to recommend products appropriately.
Nurses have a vital role to play in this field: It will allow them to bolster their autonomy and work to the full scope of their practice while also improving outcomes for their patients. They are well-trained and positioned to lead the way and scale to meet the needs of the millions of medical patients who will need help. By applying nursing theories, such as Jean Watson's "Science of Caring" and Nora Pender's "Health Promotion Model," nurses can bring a holistic approach to health care that supports their education interventions. Nursing guidance involves assessment, goal-setting, supportive care, nursing interventions, and the therapeutic relationship, all of which are key to successful outcomes with botanic medicine. By applying practice-based evidence and translating observed practices and outcomes into evidence and guidelines, nurses can be leaders in this field, bringing the science forward.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the history of cannabis use and prohibition.
- Know adverse outcomes for patients if plant medicine care is not implemented.
- Understand medical cannabis indications and outcomes.
- Know the history of cannabis nursing.
- Understand the role nurses play in botanical medicine.
- Know the benefits of practice-based evidence vs. evidence-based practice.
Online registration is available.
